Jagannath University (JnU) students gathered in a procession on Tuesday to protest against the decision of not permitting the students to arrange any iftar party on Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) and Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) campus.
However, that initiative was obstructed by the JnU administration which seems to be a malpractice of power in the students' eyes. The procession commenced from the university central mosque and ended up at the cafeteria where the proctorial body came and obstructed the processioners to continue. The processioners were compelled to end the procession under the administration's interference.
“Iftar is an integral part of every fast. Brotherhood bond becomes strong in everyone's participation in iftar. It is really an undesirable interference in a productive place like university”, said a processioner Ariful Islam. The processioner shared his frustration saying that Chhatra League needs no permission to do any procession on campus while they need. “We wanted to organize a peaceful procession but the administration forced us to stop.” In this regard, Proctor Md. Jahangir Hossain said,
“We did not stop them. We talked to them peacefully. Loud chanting during class-examinations on campus disturbs students' attention. We understood their sentiments and discussed with them accordingly. They took our words positively.” He also said that in order to maintain a peaceful atmosphere in the campus, all organizations should take permission from the proctor's office to conduct their activities. Since they did not take any permission, the proctorial body spoke to them on their own initiative.
